Portal 2 Playset – Chell with Weighted Companion Cube and Aperture Science Handheld Portal Device
The ongoing PSN outage has been doing wonders for my amigurumi productivity, but has also left me searching for single player games to focus on. Portal 2 has been a recent acquisition and focus of mine, and since a weighted companion cube was a recurring theme in the requests generated by the call for pattern suggestions post, a playset made perfect sense. Initially I wanted to make Wheatley and a Turret (I’m different!), but those types of ambitions tend to end up in me getting distracted and abandoning projects midway through, so I turfed those two and may pick them up later on. Chell is wired and can be posed but because the portal device is so fragile, I don’t dare move her arms much at all.
As with most of my creations, the pattern is free and included but be warned… this is no beginner pattern. You should be familiar with amigurumi crochet techniques, reading patterns and be willing to assemble, cobble on and fiddle with little maddening pieces, wiring and glue… but in the end it will be worth it I promise… for science. More pictures and the epic pattern after the jump!

Panels should be stitched to the gun using embroidery thread because the pieces are so small, using yarn can warp the shape too much. A good fabric glue can work well also. Using wire or cut piece of black bobby pins, create and glue in place the grabby things and wiring for the portal device.
2. INC, DC INC, INC; repeat; join then finish off and weave in tail on wrong side
I used cut bobby pins for the claw type things and bent vinyl coated paper clips I coated in black acrylic paint for the wiring. Anchor the pieces into the panels using fabric glue to secure.

hi,I realy like your side and helped me a lot increase my crochet level! I’m courious about how did you fix the eyes on this doll? Thanks!
They are felt that was glued on and painted. Lots of people hate them 🙂
What size hook and yarn are required for this pattern?
Worsted weight yarn and a 3.5mm hook is what I used.
Hey! I looked everywhere for a Companion-Cube-Pattern! This looks very good but I want to know how big the cube is when finished. Thanks in advance! 🙂

Hi! Love your website. Wanted a bit of help… I was hoping to make a couple of cubes to hang from my rear view mirror and these are a bit small but I really like the design! I’m a beginner so I’m not sure what I could do to make it double size. Any suggestions?
It’s a bit complicated but you would basically need to plot out the ratios of the stitches across the same ratio of height.
You could use a larger hook.. and double strands of yarn too.. that is a lot easier than doing a lot of calculations.. 🙂 if it says a G hook then try an I or J 🙂 ….. I do that all the time and it works quite well for me!
I’m not a fan of how multistrand or looser fabric looks but if you’re happy with it, more power to you 🙂

I have tried a lot of times and I can’t seem to do the cube’s nubblies… probably I’m not understanding the pattern. I guess I could try to do little circles to put in their places, but it won’t be the same… do you have any tip for me, please? I would really like to make this perfectly xD
Are you able to take a picture of what you have made?
well, I can… but it’s just a big stitch confusion xD how can I show it to you?
I have no idea what you mean by stitch confusion. Usually when people are making things wrong they take a picture of what they come up with, post it to imgur and link it here. If you are not understanding the instructions and haven’t tried to make the thing yet, it’s pretty hard for me to get a sense of how to better explain it, since I don’t get what isn’t clicking in the first place.
I guess try watching this tutorial on working in both sides of a chain and see if that helps.
Thanks for helping me! Here is what I have done after some attempts…

Okay it looks correct in that the correct number of stitches are there. Are you able to flatten it at all? Sometimes working in both sides of a chain makes like a curved envelope like shape but you can flatten it out manually before sewing it on. If you are not able to flatten it, try making a nubbly again only this time, after the second INC, before you pop over to the other side, add one CH. The purpose of this CH will only be to widen the bridge between the two side so it isn’t so curve shaped.

My teen daughter was looking for something to do this summer, and decided to try making amigurumi. She plans to try the Companion Cube eventually, but wants to start with an easier project (she found a anime-style kitten pattern on another site) and work her way up. The Companion Cube part of your pattern looks slightly faster & easier than some versions I’ve seen, largely because it appears to be smaller.
BTW, approx. how much yarn is needed for this project (esp. the Companion Cube part)?
You posted this pattern at a rather opportune moment – I was just about to attempt to make my own Companion Cube so that I could give it to someone who is graduating in a few days, if I couldn’t find a pattern for it online. That, of course, would take time, and the person is graduating in a few days (I’m such a procrastinator) XD
Great job on both the Companion Cube and Chell :3
+I would make Chell, but making people reminds me of stalkers, soooo… >__>
Hi, just wanted to tell you how excited I got when I saw this! I have been looking for something to make my husband for father’s day and this is it, we’ve been obsessed with the game since it came out. I just had one question that I don’t think I saw in the pattern: what did you use for the eyes and mouth? I really like the look of them and don’t do a whole lot outside of embroidery floss and button eyes on my projects. Thanks so much!
I painted pieces of felt with acrylic paint. It’s a very thin felt that is made from sheep’s wool, but you could use craft store acrylic felt too. To paint I just watered the acrylic paint down a bit so it wasn’t too thick. Once the piece was dry, I trimmed the edges (painting them and holding them made the edges fuzz a bit) and glued them to the face with fabric glue. You could stitch it on but I wanted as little texture as possible. I was hesitant to apply the lips because I thought they
This pattern was the perfect size, every other pattern I have seen has been for ridiculously huge cubes that I know I’d never finish. I posted a picture of my finished cube on my website. crochetbyallie.com. I’d LOVE to see a Wheatley and turret pattern.
I would also love to see some more portal patterns! Allie, that crochetbyallie.com website looks very nice. I look forward to seeing more stuff on it, but can see that you had recently launched it.
Is there any chance I could get a pattern for just the jumpsuit
You could also do twist ties for the claw type things.
Yes that’s a brilliant suggestion, you could even trim them a bit to make it look more like the things… the bobby pins weren’t ideal because they were kind of brittle, I broke one when I was wrestling to sew the portal device to the doll’s hand… it was sort of a freakout but luckily I was able to pull out the stump and replace it with a new one. Thanks for the comment 🙂
OMG, this is awesome. I am so making this for my husband and I can’t wait to see your turret and Wheatley.
As always, amazing stuff

This is adorable~<3 I'll have to try making them sometime.
Any plans to do Wheatley? He was ridiculously adorably, and I'd probably freak out if you did. <3
Yes I plan to do Wheatley and a Sentry Turret because they are some of my favorites. I have such a tendency to get distracted and then not finish projects that I figured better to post what I have so far and add to it later, rather than risk not posting it at all. Wheatley would be pretty easy because he is just a big ball with some details. 🙂
Yay! I’m super duper excited about that then~
Yeah, I know what you mean. I do the same thing whenever I pick stuff to knit.
are there any plans to make a GLADOS potatoe?
Maybe… 😀
